I used to be fearful of sharks until I saw a reef shark whilst snorkelling off Malaysia 20 years ago. It didn't attack me, in fact it showed no interest in me whatsoever! Having 'survived' that first encounter I went back to the same spot the next day to see if I could find it again, and there began my love of sharks. These creatures are every bit as majestic and awe-inspiring as big cats, elephants and rhinos and they too deserve our protection and respect. Finning is a truly inhumane and disgusting practice and every loop-hole that allows it needs closing, that is why I have joined the Project Aware campaign and am putting my (swimming) fins where my heart is.
Huge thanks in particular to Betty Ma and Barley Chan who went round the staffroom, at my school in Hong Kong, promoting the cause and reminding people that this is about the environment as much as just about one particular animal. Sharks are essential to a health marine environment, without them entire eco-systems are threatened. So, helping sharks is helping all those other creatures too.
Hope you enjoy the short video clip of a white tip reef shark that I was lucky enough to encounter in Komodo, Indonesia last December too.
